I wasn't asking what the soul was made of I was asking what the spirit was made of? The nafs..also it seems the English translation of the rouh and nafs are reversed, meanwhile the soul should be translated as rouh and the nafs is spirit based on the roots of the words.

قال الله تعالى

وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الرُّوحِ ۖ قُلِ الرُّوحُ مِنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّي وَمَا أُوتِيتُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا [الإسراء: ٨٥]. (And they ask you about the ruh. Say: the ruh is from the command of my Lord, and you have been given only little knowledge.) So Allah did not describe its material or its make-up; He answered that it is from His command. [الإسراء: ٨٥]

قال السعدي: الروح من جملة مخلوقاته التي أمرها أن تكون فكانت، وفي الآية دليل على أن السؤال عما لا يحتاجه السائل ينبغي أن يُعرض عنه إلى ما ينفعه. (السعدي، ت ١٣٧٦هـ: الإسراء ٨٥)

The nafs is a different word and is used differently: اللَّهُ يَتَوَفَّى الْأَنْفُسَ حِينَ مَوْتِهَا وَالَّتِي لَمْ تَمُتْ فِي مَنَامِهَا [الزمر: ٤٢]. (Allah takes the anfus at the time of their death, and those that have not died, in their sleep.) The nafs here is what Allah takes back, whether at death or in sleep. [الزمر: ٤٢]

And: وَمَا أُبَرِّئُ نَفْسِي ۚ إِنَّ النَّفْسَ لَأَمَّارَةٌ بِالسُّوءِ إِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّي [يوسف: ٥٣]. (I do not declare my nafs free of blame; the nafs commands evil, except what my Lord has mercy on.) Al-Saʿdī explains that the nafs is described as a mount of Satan and a door through which sin enters the person, and that being saved from it is a mercy from Allah. (السعدي، ت ١٣٧٦هـ: يوسف ٥٠–٥٧)

And: وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّاهَا [الشمس: ٧]. (By the nafs and what proportioned it.) Al-Saʿdī says the nafs is among the greatest of Allah's signs and is described by its swift movement and the changes of will, love and hatred in it. (السعدي، ت ١٣٧٦هـ: الشمس ١–١٥)

قال رسول الله ﷺ

قال ﷺ في حديث ابن مسعود في تكوين الجنين: ثم يرسل الله إليه الملك بأربع كلمات... ثم ينفخ فيه الروح (سبيل الرشاد: ١/٥٥، ح ٤٧). (...then the angel is sent to him with four words... then the ruh is breathed into him.) So the ruh is what is breathed into the body after the angel's mission. (سبيل الرشاد: ١/٥٥، ح ٤٧)

وفي حديث ابن مسعود في سؤال اليهود: فأسكت النبي ﷺ فلم يرد عليه شيئًا فعلمت أنه يوحى إليه... فلما نزل الوحي قال: ﴿ويسألونك عن الروح قل الروح من أمر ربي﴾. (سبيل الرشاد: ٢/٦١٢، ح ١٨٨٥) (The Prophet ﷺ stayed silent and gave no answer; Ibn Masʿūd understood that revelation was coming, and then the verse was revealed.) The Prophet ﷺ gave no description of the ruh beyond the revelation. (سبيل الرشاد: ٢/٦١٢، ح ١٨٨٥)

وفي حديث أم سلمة: إن الروح إذا قبض تبعه البصر (مسلم، ت ٢٦١هـ: ٢/٦٣٥، ح ٩٢٠)، وهو في صحيح مسلم. (When the ruh is taken, the sight follows it.) The ruh is described as something that can be seized and is followed by the eye. (مسلم، ت ٢٦١هـ: ٢/٦٣٥، ح ٩٢٠)

وفي الصحيحين: الأرواح جنود مجندة، فما تعارف منها ائتلف، وما تناكر منها اختلف (البخاري، ت ٢٥٦هـ: ٤/١٣٣، ح ٣٣٣٦). (The ruhs are gathered hosts; those that knew each other there are drawn together, those that did not are set apart.) Al-Bukhārī gives this hadith, and it speaks of the ruhs before and after their meeting in the bodies, not of their make-up.

(ابن حجر، ت ٨٥٢هـ: ١٣/٤٤٤) (Ibn Ḥajar notes that the Qur'ān never calls the human spirit 'ruh', but calls it 'nafs'.) Note that this observation is one scholar's reading of the verses, not a ruling from the text.

(ابن القيم، ت ٧٥١هـ: ٣/٢٤٨) (Ibn al-Qayyim: this is merely a technical distinction; Allah calls it nafs in all its states and the Prophet ﷺ calls it ruh.) This text is later than the Prophet ﷺ and the Companions and shows how scholars handled the two words, not a ruling from the revelation.

ونقل ابن أبي العز أن النفس توصف بأنها تُتوفى وتُبعث وبأنها ترجع وتدخل الجنة، وأن الروح توصف بأنها تُقبض ويتبعها البصر. (ابن أبي العز، ت ٧٩٢هـ: ١/٤٤٤)

تنبيه

Your point about the translation: the English words 'soul' and 'spirit' are not decided by the Arabic roots here. The sources above do not settle which English word fits which Arabic word, and I did not find in them any ruling about the English wording. What the sources do show is how the Arabic words are used: ruh is what is from Allah's command, breathed in, and seized at death [الإسراء: ٨٥] (سبيل الرشاد: ١/٥٥، ح ٤٧) (مسلم، ت ٢٦١هـ: ٢/٦٣٥، ح ٩٢٠); nafs is what is taken back at death and in sleep and what commands evil [الزمر: ٤٢] [يوسف: ٥٣].

The sources do not give the material or composition of the ruh or the nafs. Allah told us it is 'from my Lord's command' and that our knowledge is little [الإسراء: ٨٥] (السعدي، ت ١٣٧٦هـ: الإسراء ٨٥). Beyond that I did not find any text in the sources describing what it is made of, and so I do not state anything here that the revelation did not.

The kind of hadith literature and the later works on theology that describe the ruh in detail (its substance, whether it is body or accident) are not from the Prophet ﷺ, the Companions or the Followers; such terms were not used by them. So we keep to what Allah and His Messenger ﷺ said.

الخلاصة

The ruh is from the command of Allah; its reality is not described to us, and its material is not given [الإسراء: ٨٥] (السعدي، ت ١٣٧٦هـ: الإسراء ٨٥).

The nafs is what Allah takes at death and in sleep, and it is described as commanding evil unless Allah has mercy [الزمر: ٤٢] [يوسف: ٥٣].

Scholars note that the Qur'ān calls the human self 'nafs' and the Prophet ﷺ also calls it 'ruh' (ابن حجر، ت ٨٥٢هـ: ١٣/٤٤٤) (ابن القيم، ت ٧٥١هـ: ٣/٢٤٨), but the sources give nothing more about its make-up or about the English wording.
